Eating in Cyprus
You will certainly never grow hungry in Cyprus as when touring the villages someone is sure to offer you a Greek coffee, some fruit, cheese, wine or even a shot of “Zivania” a local spirit with fire in its heart.
Dotted around are several simple taverna’s, serving tasty traditional food. They usually don’t have menus as they serve fresh produce of the day, this is called a “Meze” This is a selection of several dishes both cold and hot. It will give a novice to Cypriot cooking the opportunity to taste many flavours and textures. This is a process that definitely must not be hurried as these little dishes (over 24) are served one after the other, giving you a chance to savour your meal while washing it down with the locally made wine.
Throughout the island International restaurants serve food from every country of the world. Every one has the opportunity to savour the tastes and flavours of many cuisines in Cyprus. Most restaurants offer wines from Europe, South Africa, Australian, Chilean to name but a few.
The local wine has improved over the years and compares well with any on the European market. There are several wineries dotted about the Troodos hills offering free wine tasting. Well worth a visit.
Limassol boasts of a Wine Festival taking place in the public gardens every year, where all small and large wineries set up wine tasting for the public. Introducing their new wines, as well as the old favourites. Several thousand visitors make a special trip every year to sample our wines. Of course local restaurants set up barbeques with the traditional “Souvla” cooking on huge spits. The aroma blowing in the breeze to tempt you. A great accompaniment to the wine.
