Education in Cyprus
In Cyprus Education is split into two sectors – the Governmental Sector and the Private Sector.
Governmental Sector
The Governmental sector starts with pre-education for children aged between three and five. Children educated in this sector will then go on to Primary school at the age of five and a half years, followed by Secondary General or Secondary Technical / Vocational.
Lessons are taught in Greek and English as a foreign lanquage, so if foreign children wish to attend a government school then knowledge of the Greek language is essential.
School fees are paid by the Government.
Private Sector
Private schools start with Kindergarten – children can attend these schools from an early age, depending on the facilities and rules of the individual Kindergarten. From the age of five and a half years, children attend Primary followed by secondary Education.
Private school lessons are taught in English.
Private schools are owned and administered by individuals and bodies, are funded mainly by tuition fees and are liable for inspection by the Ministry of Education and Culture.
Third level education in Cyprus includes the University of Cyprus, Public Tertiary Institutions and Private Colleges.
